Dick Motz

Posted

I see Dick Motz has died at the all too early age of 67.

I remember going to Lancaster Park in my youth.  Motz was the favourite of all us kids.  He bowled fast and he swung the bat like there was no tomorrow.

I seem to recall that after his career finished he commented that we were now teaching our bowlers to be mediocre.  His issue (iirc) was that young kids were having line and length drilled into them too much.  Dick felt that if any of our young kids showed the ability to bowl fast, then they should be encouraged to simply bowl as fast as they could.  Build the speed up to frightening proportions and then worry about direction and control later.  There may have been more than a little bit of truth in that.

Rest in peace Dick Motz.
